Blocked milk ducts

Physical Therapy Treatment of Blocked Milk Ducts

If a mother is unable to clear a blocked milk duct independently, physical therapy intervention has proven to be very helpful. A particular massage technique and therapeutic ultrasound help pump the milk out and unblock the duct.
This type of treatment can help prevent mastitis from developing if done early enough, so timely treatment is important.

We generally start treatment within twenty-four hours of a milk duct becoming blocked to clear it before mastitis develops.  Patient education is also emphasized, so each woman learns how to clear any future blockages.
